The Journey – When a Smile Saved Me

At the beginning of my immersion into my spiritual garden, Dale Carnegie was one of my first mentors. His book saved me from falling into a deep well of depression and hopelessness. I also took his courses when I started my wedding business. He was like a father leading me through the forest of new and unknown future assignments. I will always recommend his deep life advice.

The Summit – Action Speaks Louder Than Words

Action, Faith, and the Power of a Smile

One of his most impactful quotes,

"Action speaks louder than words, and a smile says more than any speech,"

truly resonates with my journey. Over the years, I’ve realized that action is the embodiment of our intentions, and a smile—such a simple yet powerful action—speaks volumes, often more than words ever could.

This concept isn’t just practical wisdom; it’s deeply rooted in Scripture. James 2:26 says:

"As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead."

Just as a body requires the spirit to live, our faith requires action to be alive. It’s not enough to speak of love, faith, or kindness; we must demonstrate these values through tangible actions.

Spiritual Connection – Living Out the Word

In both Carnegie’s and the Bible’s teachings, we’re encouraged to go beyond words and make a difference through our actions—whether it's a smile, a gesture of kindness, or a deeper, consistent effort to live out our faith. This is how we cultivate meaningful relationships, serve others, and truly reflect God’s love in the world.

3 Steps to Live Out the Principle of Action and a Smile:

1. Start with Intentionality in Your Actions

Begin each day with a clear intention to act with kindness and sincerity. Set out to be the hands and feet of God's love in every interaction. Ask yourself, What actions will I take today to reflect my faith and love for others?

2. Smile—A Simple Yet Powerful Action

Remember that a smile is a deliberate act of kindness. It opens hearts and builds connections, often making others feel seen and valued. Practice offering a smile in every encounter, knowing that it communicates love, joy, and warmth without needing words.

3. Reflect and Act on Your Faith Daily

Actions that reflect our faith require consistency. Commit to acting on what you believe in, whether through helping others, forgiving, or speaking life-giving words. In everything you do, ask, How can I align my actions with the love of God today?

These three steps will help you live out the power of action and a smile in a way that reflects both Dale Carnegie's wisdom and the Bible’s call to live out our faith through deeds.

Future Principles to Explore:

As you continue to develop and refine these practices, consider the following 10 principles from Dale Carnegie, each paired with a Bible verse. These principles will guide you further in aligning your actions with God’s Word:

1. Don’t Criticize, Condemn, or Complain

Carnegie Quote: "Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain—but it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving."

Bible Verse: Matthew 7:1-2 – "Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

2. Give Honest and Sincere Appreciation

Carnegie Quote: "The rarest of all human qualities is the ability to see others as they really are—without judgment."

Bible Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up."

3. Arouse in the Other Person an Eager Want

Carnegie Quote: "Talk to someone about themselves and they'll listen for hours."

Bible Verse: Philippians 2:4 – "Let each of you look not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others."

4. Become Truly Interested in Other People

Carnegie Quote: "You can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."

Bible Verse: Romans 12:10 – "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor."

5. Smile

Carnegie Quote: "You don't feel like smiling? You don't have to. Just smile. If you wait until you're in the mood, you'll never do it."

Bible Verse: Proverbs 15:13 – "A glad heart makes a cheerful face."

6. Remember That a Person’s Name is, to That Person, the Sweetest Sound in Any Language

Carnegie Quote: "A person's name is, to that person, the sweetest sound in any language."

Bible Verse: Isaiah 43:1 – "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine."

7. Be a Good Listener. Encourage Others to Talk About Themselves

Carnegie Quote: "Talk to people about themselves and they will listen for hours."

Bible Verse: Proverbs 18:13 – "If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame."

8. Talk in Terms of the Other Person’s Interests

Carnegie Quote: "The royal road to a man’s heart is to talk to him about the things he treasures most."

Bible Verse: 1 Corinthians 9:22 – "To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak."

9. Make the Other Person Feel Important—and Do It Sincerely

Carnegie Quote: "The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated."

Bible Verse: Philippians 2:3 – "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."

10. The Only Way to Get the Best of an Argument is to Avoid It

Carnegie Quote: "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still."

Bible Verse: Proverbs 15:1 – "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

By integrating these core actions into your life, you not only grow closer to your true self but also create a meaningful environment for others to thrive. Each principle, rooted in both practical advice and Biblical wisdom, will help guide you as you live out God's love in tangible ways.

"Action Speaks Louder Than Words and a Smile Says, I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you."

Reflection: My Own Smile & Action Journey

Take a moment:

  • When was the last time your smile made someone’s day?

  • What does “faith in action” look like for you this week?

  • Which principle will you commit to practicing intentionally today

Closing Prayer

Lord, help me reflect Your love in small, quiet actions—through a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand. Make me a doer of the Word, not just a speaker of it. Amen.
